Medium sized dog breeds
Many hounds, spaniels, and herd dogs belong to this category. Bred for agility, obedience, endurance, and intelligence, these dogs are primarily the stock of working dogs—companions to hunters and shepherds, drovers of livestock, and protectors of the homestead. They are smart, sometimes stubborn, and often represent thousands of years of the relationship between dog and man. Many, like the Spitz types have been elaborated upon and their descendents belong to a variety of different breeds. Some, like the New Guinea Singing Dogs and Carolina Dogs, remain virtually untamed. High energy and deep companionship are needs many of these breeds share.
